ARTICLE REVIEW

1.  Demography

Tittle                     :   Teaching Englis Through Literature
The Author          :   Murat HiลŸmanoฤŸlu is an instructor
at Ufuk University, English Preparatory School.

2. Background
  •   Purpose :
To develop a study of literature as a popular technique in teaching basic language skills (ie reading, writing, listening and speaking) and language areas (ie vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation) in our day.

In recent years, the role of literature as a basic component and source of authentic texts of the language curriculum rather than an ultimate aim of English instruction has been gaining momentum. Amongst language teachers, there has been a hot debate as to how, when, where, and why literature should be in corporated in ESL / EFL curriculum. Many teachers consider the use of literature in language teaching as an interesting and worthy concern. In this article will discuss, why a language teacher should use literary texts in the language classroom, what sort of literature language teachers should use with language learners, literature and the teaching of language skills, and benefits of different genres of literature to language teaching will be taken into account. That way, the place of literature as a tool rather than an end in teaching English as a second or foreign language will be unearthed.

3. Content

The use of literature as a technique for teaching both basic language skills (i.e. reading, writing, listening and speaking) and language areas (ie vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation) is very popular within the field of foreign language learning and teaching now a days. Since translation gives students the chance to practice the lexical, syntactic, semantic, pragmatic and stylistic knowledge they have acquired in other courses, translation both as an application area covering four basic skills and as the fifth skill is emphasized in language teaching.

Literature plays an important role in teaching four basic language skills like reading, writing, listening and speaking. However, when using literature in the language classroom, skills should never be taught in isolation but in an integrated way. All teachers should also try to teach basic language skills as an integral part of the use of spoken and written language, as part of the means to create referential and interaction meanings, not just as a production aspect of words and phrases and spoken and written sentences.

4. Strenghtness and Weakness
  • Sterngthness :
In this article explain in detail what parts of the language literature should be studied and explored. And what literary genres can be developed using appropriate language literature.
  • Weakness :
The author gives less examples and how to apply it in life and real. As well as evidence that anyone has ever succeeded in applying what the author wrote in his article.

5. Conclusion

Literature plays an important role in the English programs of many non-English speaking countries. Nevertheless, there are some problems encountered by language teachers within the area of teaching English through literature. Firstly, there are very few pedagogically-designed appropriate materials that can be used by language teachers in a language classroom. Secondly, there is a lack of preparation in the area of literature teaching in TESL / TEFL programs. Thirdly, there is the absence of clear-cut objectives defining the role of literature in ESL/EFL. So many teachers try to include literature in their classes, but have no background and training in that area.

The teacher has an important role in teaching English through literature. First, he should determine the aim of language teaching in relation to the needs and expectations of the students. Providing questionnaire or interviewing with the students orally, the teacher can set up the aim and the objectives of the language teaching. Second, he should select the appropriate language teaching method, teaching techniques, and classroom activities. Subsequently, the teacher should select the literary texts relevant to the aim and the objectives of his teaching. While selecting literary texts to be used in language classroom, the students’ language proficiency, interests, age, sex, etc should be taken into account in order not to bore students with inappropriate materials.
